There are a handful of burger joints in and around the Gastown area, but unless you are in the know, Deacon’s Corner, tucked away just on the corner of Alexander St, will probably have slipped by you.
Upon entering we were greeted with the heavenly smell of a griddle busy with custom-made burgers and a tentative server ready to take care of us.
Everything on the menu looked great—from eggs benedicts to poutines and custom burgers—there’s a little something for everyone here.
We took advantage of the current SocialShopper deal, which offers an award-winning burger dinner for 2 people, plus fries, garden salad or coleslaw for just 9 bucks.
If you’re looking for something a little more fancy however, there’s an abundant list of additional burger toppings you can opt for. Take for example the 3 Amigos Burger, topped with Chorizo, Guacamole and Salsa. Or the Reuben Burger, loaded with Corn Beef, Sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese. You can really get playful with the toppings here.
The burger arrived to the table in a fun old-school diner style basket. Nestled in between a soft white Kaiser bun, the tenderloin and sirloin patty was juicy and flavourful.
As anyone knows though, it doesn’t matter how good a burger place grills their patties if they can’t master the art of fries. Thankfully, the fries at Deacon’s Corner came crisp and well seasoned.
We paired our meal with a bottle of the Philips Hop IPA (not included in the Social Shopper promotion). We found this beer to be a nice compliment to our burgers and enjoyed its hoppy nature and malt backbone.
Overall, dinner at Deacon’s corner was enjoyable and we found it to be a great value for the 9-dollar price tag. We appreciate that this diner is well in tune with every possible comfort food craving imaginable and we will be coming back sometime soon.
