Meat & Bread- New Pender Location

Small Girl BIG Plate Scale:

1.Don’t waste your money  2.Mediocre  3. Good  4.Very good  5.Nobel Prize Worthy

Items up for review:

1. Porchetta Sandwich $8
5/5 (Worthy of Nobel Prize)

-Most popular and recommended sandwich at Meat & Bread.

-The Ciabatta bun was nice and crispy on ouside and soft on inside. Sadly though the bread is not made in house ( delivered from Swiss Bakery).

-Porchetta (fatty pork meat) was extremely rich in flavor.

-What made this sandwich worthy of a Nobel Prize were the “cracklings”; the pork rind/skin on the actual pork roast that got caramelized to become perfectly salty and crunchy. The cracklings also provided the sandwich with an amazing textural component.

-This is an absolute must have if you stop by Meat & bread

2. Meat & Bread Daily Special: Pemberton Meadows Beef Chuck & Blue Cheese Aioli Sandwich. $8
2.5/5 (mediocre-good)

-Also Inside the sandwich: Caramelized Onion & Sauteed Mushroom, Blue Cheese Aioli, Arugula, Red Wine Jus.

-Despite the red wine jus and blue cheese aioli, this was actually a very “safe sandwich”. Think beef dip taken up a few notches.

-I liked it but didn’t love it. The flavors were good and it was evident that there was thought put in this sandwich, but it just wasn’t excellent.

Conclusion and Meat & Bread Must-Knows:

-This new Pender location is in the heart of downtown Vancouver, so expect long line ups during lunch hour.

-Seating consists of only one long banquet style table. More of a grab-and-go joint.

-There is a new daily special everyday, however, the Porchetta Sandwich is a menu staple.

-Extremely reasonably priced for the quality and amount of meat given.

-One thing extremely odd about this place is that they WILL NOT cut your sandwich in half. They also don’t have knifes. The reason being that “the sandwich fixings will fall out”, as one member of staff had stated to me. The sandwiches are meant to be ate as one piece, and one piece only. I have respect for this though– although, it does make sharing extremely difficult.

Meat & Bread on Urbanspoon

Cafe Medina- must try breakfast spot

Small Girl BIG Plate Scale:

1.Don’t waste your money  2.Mediocre  3.Good  4.Very good  5. Nobel Prize Worthy

 Items up for review:

1. Lavender Latte   $3.60 (8 oz)
4/5- very good

-          Very unique Latte flavor, especially for Vancouver where anything past a chai latte is difficult to find.

-          Lavender flavor was present without being overwhelming

-          Creamy & smooth mouth-feel.

-          Absolute must-have if you stop by Cafe Medina.

2. Belgian Waffles $3.15 Per 1 Waffle + 1 Dip
5/5 – worthy of a Nobel Prize

-Perfectly crispy on the outside & delicate on the inside

-Beautiful nutty flavor

-These waffles are one of the best you will ever find in Vancouver

-Each waffle comes with a dipping sauce. We ordered the Salted Caramel and the Lavender Milk chocolate. I highly recommend both.

-NOT cheap at $3 a piece, but so, so worth it. I could probably eat 20 of these and still smile after.

 3. Paella  $13
2/5 (Mediocre)

-Decription: 1 baked egg, curried orzo, Hungarian chorizo, zucchini, red pepper, roasted corn, grano padarno, watercress, avocado and tomato salad.

-It was very oily (most likely from the chorizo). It wasn’t good but it wasn’t bad either

-Flavors were great, but there was just something about it that we couldn’t quite put our finger on.

-However I loved the avocados in the paella. Pretty genius addition that also provided the dish with a great textural component.

-For $13 I don’t recommend this. For $8, maybe.

Conclusion & Cafe Medina Must-Knows:

-Hands down one of the best breakfast/brunch spots in Vancouver

-Great service

-Tidy washrooms

-Not a secret gem! Will get jam packed on weekends.

-Very cute ambiance, although, some of the tables are uncomfortably close together.

-Items you must try: Belgian Waffles, Lavender Latte

Overall, Cafe Medina is an absolute must-try in Vancouver. The waffles alone are worth the 45 minute weekend wait .

Love,

Minami Restaurant in Yaletown– Grand Opening

There’s a new kid on the Yaletown block and they’re awesome.

Foodies I present to you Minami Restaurant. A remarkable Japanese restaurant which I had the pleasure of getting to know at their grand opening party tonight.

The grand opening party was very extravagant. Everything from the food to the ambiance was top-notch.

Aburi Prime Rib, cubed & skewered, finished with soy glazed black truffle wild mushroom duxelle sauceAburi Salmon Oshi Sushi: local salmon pressed and dressed with Chef’s own sauce, topped with jalapéno.

The amount of love and thought put into this restaurant was refreshing. As I stated in my morning column for Vancity Buzz– this restaurant had soul; A quality which I would say many restaurants lack today.

Saikyo Miso Baked Sablefish, served on a wonton spoon with wasabi dashi broth and yuzu miso foam

I had the honor of meeting Seigo Nakamura, the owner and mastermind behind both Minami and its sister restaurant Miku tonight. He was a wonderful person who shared not only his resturant vision but purpose with me. He stated that he wants to “build a community” that both Minami and Miku are more to him than just “businesses”.

I can confidently state that Minami will soon house the best Japanese food in Vancovuer. The food I ate tonight was truly memorable. It was art.

If you want authentic Japanese food this is the new go-to joint.

One Meal Review: Ahi Tuna Noodle Salad, Fairmont Hotel

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Ahi Tuna Noodle Salad. $32

Cilantro, Lime, Papaya Salsa, Sesame Soy Vinaigrette

When thinking about good eats in Vancouver- The Fairmont Hotel is usually never considered. However, it should be given some credit! This salad did great things to my day! The Ahi Tuna was a perfect medium and the ginger and mango combination was extremely successful. It is by far one of the best salads I have ever had. Though, as it should be, at a mere 32 dollars! Yikes! The price is shocking and is perhaps the sole reason I haven’t gone back weekly (yes, it was that good!). I would only recommend this salad if you are being treated or if you have a money tree in your back yard.

Rogue Kitchen & Wetbar: A Restaurant Review

Rogue Kitchen & Wetbar is a fairly new restaurant that has opened in the heart of Gastown, in the prime location of Waterfront Station. It is a funky restaurant that definitely makes a powerful statement with its eye-catching light fixtures & glowing walls. Disappointingly however, the food was painfully average and was not even close to supporting the `beyond ordinary experience`  this restaurant was trying to achieve.

Here is a taste of what I got to try.

1. First was the Albacore Tuna Tataki ; sushi grade tuna, mango miso coulis, shiso & citrus soy marinade; edamame salad $13.49

When I was first going over the menu the description of the Tuna Tataki was what had first drawn me in. It was a typical restaurants`overly exaggerated description-however, the mango miso coulis & shiso marinade got me extremely excited and I knew I had to try it.

The presentation was beautiful. If only it had tasted as good as it had looked. The tuna was perfectly cooked, however, there was way way way too much edamame! After a few bites-all the once beautiful flavor combinations in my mouth had morphed into the dominant flavor of edamame and only edamame.

The mango miso coulis was OK, it was delicate as it should have been- but made no statement in the dish what so ever. Overall for $13.49,  I was disappointed.

2. The next appetizer I tried was the Sushi Bombs 2.0; tempura prawn, albacore tuna, tobiko, wasabi, sriracha & sesame seeds; chased with wasabi soy $9.99

OK- these were bomb! I not only loved the presentation of this dish but also the overall idea behind it. They were playful, funky & had great flavor combinations. I mostly enjoyed the wasabi soy dressing that you got to release yourself from the pipetter.

This dish was also extremely fair priced- at only $9.99. I would definitely recommend this.

3. I next got to try the main dishes. The first being the Coconut poached Chicken Salad ; snap peas, red & yellow peppers, mango, mixed greens, cashews, thin asian noodles, sesame soy dressing $14.99

I`m not sure where to begin with this dish. It had good intentions, I suppose. There was nothing bad about this dish but there was also nothing good about it either. There was just too much going on. From mango to snap peas, to bland cashews. It just seemed as though they threw any ingredient close to hand in a dish and then gave it a fancy subtitle. I also could barely taste the coconut in this coconut chicken salad.

The dressing was a dominant sesame soy dressing and could have been the reason I couldn’t taste the coconut. I also swear on my sisters  goldfish’s life that the sesame dressing was the store bought President Choice Asian Sesame Dressing which I had previously bought from superstore for $1.99. It tasted to a grain of salt- identical. Nonetheless, this salad was an overpriced disaster but if it means anything-it did have potential.

4. The last dish I got to try was the Grilled bacon & Three Cheese Sandwich; back bacon, roasted tomatoes, yellow cheddar, swiss & aged white cheddar on fresh sourdough 12.99

Dear god. They call it the adult version of a grilled cheese- but really it had just tasted like some cheese and ham slabbed between two pieces of bread. To be fair, I did enjoy the sourdough bread -it was fresh. However, I am still in awe as to how a meal such as this can be offered on a menu and then charged for almost $13!!

I could have easily made this meal at home with my two eyes closed.

Overall, this restaurant does have potential. Our server was polite, patient & experienced. However, the food was extremely disappointing. The whole point behind dining out is to experience something that your own home can`t offer- from the food to the ambiance. All the dishes I had tried, with the exception of the sushi bombs, I could have easily made at home myself.  As a result,  I would only recommend this place for an after work drink or cocktail get together. It had a convenient location & wonderful ambiance- which in the long run may be the only reason this restaurant will be able to stay open.
